Our Endo. Appointment

I have to admit that I was pacing the floor the night before our scheduled endo. appointment.  All of Andrew's test results were to be revealed from the mixed meal test that he had a couple of weeks ago.  I honestly didn't know what to expect.

When the doctor walked in, she was just beaming with Andrew's awesome progress with his diabetes.  Because of his weight loss, he's eliminated the type 2 diabetes.  The test results showed that he does NOT have Glucogen Storage Disease; He just has a really delayed insulin release.  It takes his body about 30 minutes to finally kick in instead of 5 minutes.

As I sat in anticipation, we received his A1C result of 5.0.  I know that things will be changing as Andrew comes out of his honeymoon, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts!  The good news is that the doctor has another patient just like Andrew that honeymooned for 3-4 years before things went kaput.  I'm hoping and praying that will be God's plan for Andrew.

As I sat there happy with our news, my heart became heavy as I started to think of Nicole's post from We CARA Lot Blog.  We can do all the right things and diabetes just refuses to follow the rules.  It makes no rhyme or reason sometimes.

In the end, I just have to say that I'm honored to know all of you awesome d-moms.  The more I get to know all of you, the more I feel connected like a family.  When one of us grieves, we all grieve.  When someone needs support, we're all there to pick them up with virtual hugs and words of encouragement.

I praise God for our successful diabetes appointment today and thank Him for a wonderful support group called the DOC!

Mixed Meal Test Results

Andrew's pancreas performed! YEAH!

After all the trouble that we experienced at the hospital (I will blog about this later), the mixed meal test went without a hitch.

The nurse checked his fasting blood glucose and it was 68.  They had a decision to either treat him or let it go and continue with the test.  He never should have been this low to begin with, but we experienced many problems the prior evening.

They decided to continue and see what happened.  About an hour later, they checked Andrew again and he was up to 87.  We were good to go!

The test started at 8:30 when Andrew was give .5 units of insulin and ate 1 cup Rice Chex, 1 cup milk, 1 slice bacon and 1 egg white within a 10 minute window.

The nurse came in every 30 minutes and took 3 vials of blood.  I was able to record each blood glucose reading.

1/2 hour    - 188
1    hour    - 208
1-1/2 hour - 224
2    hour    - 139
2-1/2 hour - 81
3      hour  - 59 (no symptoms) - They decided to give him a recheck which ended up being 1/2 hour
3-1/2 hour - 50 (Definite symptoms! hot, sweaty, clammy, shaky)

As they confirmed the 3-1/2 hour with a 48 from the lab, the test was stopped and he was given a juice box.  We were all so excited that Andrew's pancreas didn't let us down. Andrew, on the other hand, yelled, "Hey, that's not a good number!".  We ended up laughing about it once his number came back up and the l-o-w "meanies" went away.  We obviously never want him to have hypoglycemia, but that was the only way to get confirmation from this mixed meal test.

I want to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.  They ended up using an adult I.V. because of the amount of blood that they had to take throughout the test.  They put some numbing cream on the site before they put it in.  I can say with relief that he felt NO pain!  Praise the Lord!

We should have our results in a couple of weeks.  I will keep you all updated.  They sent us home with a plan to give Andrew .25 units of insulin with breakfast and a starch snack (no insulin) at 2 hours post breakfast.  We'll see how it goes.  Not being on a pump and having to administer .25 units in a syringe is going to be VERY interesting!

Hospital - Here we come

Andrew's glucose is STILL tanking 3 hours after breakfast no matter what we've done to prevent it.

I received a call from our doctor this afternoon and they want to admit him into the hospital to run a mixed meal test, since the abnormality is occurring when he eats food.  Originally, they were going to send us down tonight, but they have to get a pre-approval through our insurance first.  Depending on when the approval comes back will dictate when we go in.

There's a slight glitch because the hospital does not allow you to bring in your own food.  Because Andrew has celiac, this could cause a problem.  I want to make sure that they can safely prepare his usual breakfast foods.  I'll be sure to pack my measuring cups so he gets the exact amounts of food.  Otherwise, it would alter the test since he eats the same exact amount of carbs at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I'll definitely keep everyone posted.  Please keep Andrew in your prayers.  Please pray that the I.V. doesn't hurt too much and that we can finally get our much needed answers.  Thank you!
