Dashed Hopes

Obviously, we have been very excited that Andrew is now off of insulin.  I've even been consulting the endocrinologist and gastroenterologist to see if he really has diabetes.  I was thinking (wishful) that maybe it was the celiac diagnosis that originally was responsible for his high blood sugars upon his diabetes diagnosis.

The past couple days since off insulin have been BEAUTIFUL!  Today's blood sugar levels:

9:15 Breakfast - 84
11:40 Before Gym Class - 90
1:15 Lunch - 67

THEN IT HAPPENED........ 3:20 and Andrew's hungry so he tests

263! WHAT???

After the panic struck, I strategically collected myself and calmly said, "Well, I guess you'll have to wait a little longer for a snack."  Meanwhile, I have a thousand questions flying through my head.  What the heck happened?

As the day progressed, he retested at 4:30 - 143 and then again at dinner 6:00 - 80.  Houston, we have landed!

Comfortable back in numbers that are normal, I finally figured out what I did wrong......He had 1 extra carb at lunch today.  I have had him on a strict diet of only 2 starch carbs per meal and 1 starch carb per snack.  As long as I do not go over the 2 starch carb load, he is able to keep at normal blood glucose levels.

One's things for sure,  Andrew's pancreas is FIGHTING ALL THE WAY TO THE END!

  1. This is so interesting to me! Justice never honeymooned so im fascinated by how it works.

When you 2 carbs do you mean 2 carb exchanges = 30gc?

  2. Hi Alexis,
This whole honeymoon thing has me in knots. I do agree though that it is quite fascinating. The doctors tell me that some kids can honeymoon but that Andrew is one of the lucky one's. Being that we caught it extremely early (he had 500 BG w/out ketones) and diagnosed the celiac so early, it might help his pacreas last longer. What scares me is the spikes that are happening inbetween the normal blood sugar levels. I honestly had to stay in bed today and just cry because the inevitable is staring me in the face. I know what lies ahead and I can't do anything about it. My heart sincerely goes out to all of you D-moms! Your strength is incredible. I meant to say that I only give Andrew 30g of starch carbs per meal. When I gave him that 3rd. one at lunch yesterday, it threw his blood sugars crazy.
