I'm Stumped!

I understand that Andrew is honeymooning.  I've seen the proof that he has type 1 diabetes from the 2 positive autoantibody tests.

I know that if he eats more than 2 starches in one meal or snack, he will spike higher than usual.

With that said, he is not on any insulin at this time.  He is actually experiencing lows!  How is this possible?  Today before lunch, his glucose number was at 51.  Yes, 51!  I had him take it twice to confirm.

The thing that scares me is that he's standing there like nothing is wrong.  I asked him, "Are you shaky?".  "No".  "'Are you feeling weak?"  "No."  He just said, "I'm hungry!"

This was right before lunch so I just fed him.  At this point, there's no need to correct the low unless it would fall between a meal.

I am scared to death because knowing that insulin is in our future, how in the world is he going to know when he's low?  Here is my burning question to all of you, "Do your children "'feel" low when they are?"

  1. I've found a forum of parents of T1s. I am sure someone there can answer your questions.

http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/ When you go to this site, click on the forums tab. Then follow to parents of T1s.

I've found this to be a very valuable site.

My son usually feels his lows when he's in bed. I think it's b/c he's still and not thinking about other things. We usually catch his lows at our scheduled checks before meals.

We're catching his lows at scheduled checks before meals as well.
