Putting On Our Seatbelts

Start the engines.....we're off on a wild ride.

With insulin as the passenger.

I received a call this afternoon from Andrew's doctor.  The insulin results from his glucose tolerance test show that he has a late response to insulin release.  Instead of the insulin being released in 10 or so minutes, his waits an hour.  That is what was contributing to the lows he was experiencing.

Our plan of attack is to add a little bit of insulin before he eats to help stabalize the spikes an hour later.  Hopefully, if everything goes correctly, he should not drop later on.  He will do a finger poke 1 hour after he eats to see how high his blood glucose levels are going.  This approach should help him to extend the honeymoon period since his pancreas will not have to work as hard.

Right now, he's considered pre-diabetic with some insulin resistence.  The doctor explained that he has a combo. of type 1 & type 2 diabetes.  His fasting blood sugars are in the normal range and she explained that those are the last to rise with type 1.

We will continue to watch his diet very carefully.  By keeping his weight down, it will control the insulin resistence.  We will only be feeding him free snacks between meals.  Wish me luck because I'm going to have a very UNHAPPY boy on my hands!

I'm placing my trust in God that He will continue to guide us through this journey.

  1. So glad you have a plan of attack as a result of the testing!
It will be an adjustment, for sure, but the results will be worth it! :)

  3. So glad you have a plan now, but I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for him and you. Thinking of you!

  4. We've not done that test as of yet. Hmm, maybe we should seeing as Jessi's A1C's are always in the 8's. (not to mention high carb diet) High's are bad...but those lows...yuck!

But like you said...God will guide you in this journey.
